OAESA's Reading Summit kicks off early with a pre-Summit dinner and programming. Join your colleagues and Project LIT's Jarred Amato to discuss combating "book deserts" with literacy initiatives that go beyond the school day.

  • 4:00 - 5:00       REGISTRATION and SHOP the PROJECT LIT BOOK FAIR 
    • All registrants for the evening's events will receive a gift certificate to shop the book fair, featuring titles hand-picked for Project LIT! 

  • 5:00 - 6:30       KEYNOTE by JARRED AMATO, PROJECT LIT
    • Project LIT Community: Empowering Readers and Leaders: This interactive session will walk attendees through the Project LIT Community journey, including a step-by-step guide to launching their own book club. Participants will also dig into the major challenges facing today’s reader, including 10 tips for creating a positive reading culture in our schools and classrooms. We will address how to: motivate and engage all readers; design and structure an effective literacy block; build an inclusive classroom library; and incorporate social justice and social emotional learning in an English classroom. Finally, we will encourage attendees to ask, “What if…?” as they develop short- and long-term solutions that will effectively engage all students.

ABOUT JARRED AMATO
As an English teacher at Maplewood High School in Nashville, Jarred became aware of book deserts. He set out to solve this problem wih Project LIT, an initiative that began as a classroom project to deliver books to areas lacking access via converted newsstands and has since grown to include book clubs with chapters nationwide.
