Featured session: A Community Effort to Keeping Students Safe
with Superintendent Phil Herman and his team from Hudson City Schools
Called to action after the recent tragedies in schools around the nation, one Ohio school district made school safety a priority. Find out how the Hudson City School District involved administrators, teachers, parents, and other community stakeholders in developing safety solutions for the students they serve.   

Keynote: An Introduction to Trauma in Schools with Melissa McClain

Learn about stress and trauma and the impact they have on a student’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive abilities in the school environment. The session will also cover techniques to prevent a trauma based reaction and what to do if a child is acting out in the classroom.

About Melissa McClain

Melissa McClain is a graduate of Kent State University and is the Community Education Program Coordinator at Akron Children's Hospital. She is responsible for a social and emotional learning curriculum that includes k-12 classroom education as well as psychological trauma education for educators and other professionals who work in a school environment. Since 2006, Melissa has trained over 135,000 students, school staff and community members. She has worked with over 275 Ohio school buildings and community organizations that work with youth and has also been lucky to travel to speak for state and national audiences on teen dating, emotional literacy, bullying, social and emotional learning, and psychological trauma.
