COVID-19 Updates & Information

OAESA, like the rest of the US, is working to manage the COVID-19 situation and disseminate credible, timely information that is crucial to our members and their schools. Check back here as needed for updates and information regarding this public health crisis.

July 3, 2020:  
Governor DeWine has announced publication of the Reset and Restart Education Planning Guide for Schools and Districts. Together with guidelines from the Ohio Department of Health, these documents will help keep students, staff and communities safe as schools restart for the 2020-2021 school year. May 20, 2020:
The National Association of School Psychologists has an excellent COVID-19 online resource that they update frequently with information on supporting the learning and well-being of students. 

May 18, 2020:
Educator licensure information has been updated on ODE's website. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department has been granted authority (House Bill 197 of the 133rd General Assembly; Section 17(H)) to issue a one-time, one-year temporary license for the 2020-2021 school year to applicants who meet all other qualifications for licensure but have been unable to complete their required initial licensure examinations. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria has a new video highlighting some of the latest developments surrounding Ohio’s coronavirus-related ordered school-building closure.

As we navigate this crisis together, it remains important to continue following the social distancing, hand hygiene and infection prevention practices that Governor Mike DeWine and Dr. Amy Acton have urged. Please keep reminding students of safe practices because we are #InThisTogetherOhio.

New information, including graduation requirements and a Remote Learning Resource Guide, has been made available over the past several weeks on the Ohio Department of Education website, and updates are being added daily. Please be sure to check back often for the latest information.

Specifically, updated information to assist schools’ homeless student liaisons as they seek to serve Ohio students experiencing homelessness during this pandemic was added today to the website here.

Likewise, updates to the Education Management Information System (EMIS) data collection calendar have been made available here.

April 10, 2020: Ohio Department of Education Posts New Information on Grading, Nutrition and School Calendars

April 7, 2020: Personal Protective Equipment and Necessary Items Needed. 
Does your school have personal protective equipment (PPE) or other necessary items that could be used to help in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19)? We ask all schools and districts to scour their storage spaces for any additional PPE or other items that could be used by medical caregivers.

April 6, 2020: COVID-19 Staffing Survey - Nurses and Health Care Staff Needed. Due to Ohio’s coronavirus-related school-building closure, school nurses being underutilized may be of service to the Medical Reserve Corps. This survey is to identify unaffiliated personnel (people not already being counted by hospitals) who could support a potential hospital surge from COVID-19.

April 5, 2020:  Graduation Requirements During COVID-19. 
One of Ohio’s top priorities in the context of the impact of the ordered school-building closure period is to ensure students can reasonably graduate at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. During these unprecedented times, it is necessary to provide flexibility in meeting graduation requirements.  This flexibility will ensure the thousands of graduation-ready students are able to receive diplomas and successfully transition to college, the workforce, the military or a self-sustaining vocation.

: Legislature Passes Legislation Addressing COVID-19
Yesterday, the Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill (HB) 197 in response to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Gov. Mike DeWine is expected to sign the bill into law, which will take immediate effect upon his signature. The linked document includes HB 197’s education-related changes of interest to OAESA members.

Community Resilience Grants Now Available
from ServeOhio, in conjunction with its partners, the American Electric Power Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service, announces the availability of grants to support community resiliency initiatives that mobilize residents to address significant needs in their community as a result of the novel coronavirus. Grant awards will range between $500 to $2,000, applications are due April 1, 2020, and projects must take place prior to April 30, 2020.
