Tell Your Members of Congress to Pass the IDEA Full Funding Act

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures services, resources, and opportunities for millions of children with disabilities.

From IDEA’s inception, the federal government made a commitment to pay 40 percent of the average per pupil expenditure (APPE) for special education. However, that pledge has never been met, and the current funding is at approximately 13 percent of APPE.

Worse, even this partial federal contribution has not kept up with actual costs. Today, over 7 million students in U.S. public schools qualify for educational services under IDEA.

That is why the IDEA Full Funding Act is so important. This bill would ensure Congress fulfills its commitment to fully fund IDEA by making funding mandatory. Funding would gradually increase annually toward the long-promised 40 percent level and ultimately result in an additional $30 billion each year.
